Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 9, 2026

MeowDB (“we”, “us”, “the site”) is an unofficial, community-run fan site for MapleStory Classic Worlds. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit meowdb.com, how we use it, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little personal data as possible.

By using MeowDB, you agree to the practices described below. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. Information We Collect

Account information (only if you register)

When you create an account, we store:

  • Your email address (used for login and password resets)
  • Your username and display name
  • A salted, hashed version of your password (we never store your password in plain text, we use PBKDF2 with 100,000 iterations and SHA-256)
  • Account creation and last-login timestamps

Activity data (only if you are logged in)

  • Quest tracker progress (which quests you have marked as complete)
  • Poll votes you have cast

Anonymous activity data (everyone)

  • A hashed fingerprint derived from your IP address and browser User-Agent, used solely to prevent duplicate poll votes. We do not store the raw IP address or User-Agent.
  • Aggregate page-view counts for popular items and monsters (no per-user identifiers)

Cookies and similar technologies

  • Session cookie (meowdb_session): set after you log in to keep you signed in. Expires after 30 days. Required for the site to remember you.
  • Local storage: used to remember your sidebar preference and (for logged-out users) your local quest tracker progress. This data never leaves your browser.
  • Advertising cookies: see Section 3 below.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and operate MeowDB’s features (quest tracker sync, polls, account login)
  • To send transactional emails such as password reset links
  • To prevent abuse (spam accounts, vote manipulation)
  • To improve the site by understanding which content is popular

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your email or account data with any third party except as described below.

3. Advertising and Third-Party Services

MeowDB displays advertising provided by NitroPay, which partners with Google AdSense and other advertising networks. These advertising partners may use cookies and similar tracking technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to MeowDB and other websites.

Our advertising partners may collect:

  • Your IP address and approximate location
  • Browser and device information
  • Pages you visit on MeowDB
  • Advertising identifiers

You have the following choices:

  • EU and UK visitors will see a consent banner (managed by NitroPay’s IAB TCF v2-compliant CMP) where you can accept, reject, or customize tracking before any advertising cookies are set.
  • You can opt out of personalized Google ads at adssettings.google.com.
  • You can opt out of third-party advertising via the Network Advertising Initiative at optout.networkadvertising.org.
  • Most browsers also allow you to block third-party cookies entirely.

Other third-party services we use:

  • Cloudflare: hosts MeowDB and provides security/CDN services. Cloudflare may log anonymized request data (IP, country, request path) for abuse prevention. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics: privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics. No personal data collected.
  • MailChannels: used to deliver password reset emails. They process your email address solely to deliver the message.

4. Data Retention

  • Account data is retained for as long as your account exists.
  • Session tokens expire after 30 days of inactivity.
  • Password reset tokens expire after a few minutes and can only be used once.
  • Deleted accounts are soft-deleted: your username is removed from public view immediately, and your data is purged on request.

5. Your Rights

Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other applicable privacy laws, you may have the right to:

  • Access: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct: ask us to fix inaccurate information
  • Delete: request that we delete your account and associated data
  • Withdraw consent: at any time, by deleting your account or contacting us
  • Object to certain processing, including targeted advertising
  • Opt out of sale (CCPA): MeowDB does not sell personal information

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@meowdb.com. We will respond within 30 days.

6. Children’s Privacy

MeowDB is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

7. Data Security

We protect your data using industry-standard practices: encrypted connections (HTTPS), salted password hashing (PBKDF2), and access controls on our database. However, no online service can guarantee absolute security. Use a strong, unique password for your MeowDB account.

8. International Data Transfers

MeowDB is operated from Canada and uses Cloudflare’s global infrastructure, which means your data may be processed in data centers around the world. By using the site, you consent to this processing.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of MeowDB after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
